Rise and Rhyme

Every Monday, Busboys and Poets in Hyattsville hosts a children’s music series that has turned out to be the restaurant’s most popular event.

On average, between 40 and 50 parents and children attend to hear either storyteller and performer Bashea “Iya” Imana or folk singer Mr. Gabe.

Event planner Simone Jacobson said the popularity of the “Rise + Rhyme” series was something of a surprise when it started in March, but noted that the event has quickly built a loyal following of parents from as far as Takoma Park and Silver Spring.

It’s also a first for the D.C.-based chain, which usually schedules more adult-oriented programming. Jacobson said the Hyattsville location also has more high chairs than any of the other Busboys.

Rise + Rhyme is held from 9:30 to 11 a.m. every Monday in the Howard Zinn Room.
