A ‘Professional’ Mural

photo-7The former home of the Professional Coffee Shop in downtown Hyattsville is sporting a new mural.

The Hyattsville Patch reported that Carlos Gutierrez, his brother Roger and sister Kelly are planning to open a restaurant in the old brick building focused on “quick eats like pizza, subs, sandwiches, breakfast items and coffee” possibly as early as this month.

After almost 20 years in business, the Professional Coffee Shop closed last year due to rising rents.

A classic greasy spoon with a dedicated clientele, the Professional Coffee Shop represented a bit of old Hyattsville made possibly by cheap rent and the close-knit community. Already, its replacement looks to be a bit more of the new Hyattsville vibe — a little cleaner and more self-consciously artsy.

If it’s successful, the restaurant could be a valuable bridge between the Shoppes at Arts District Hyattsville anchored by Busboys and Poets and the historic downtown anchored by Franklin’s, making Route 1 a little more walkable.
