The first bikram yoga studio in Prince George’s County will open this Saturday near Hyattsville in neighboring Riverdale Park.

Bikram Hot Yoga Riverdale Park will hold a grand opening at 9:30 a.m. at 6202 Rhode Island Ave., in the town center near the Farmer’s Market and the MARC station, followed by an 11 a.m. class (pre-registration required).

Yoga Space and Ballet, Tap and All That Jazz in Hyattsville already offer classes on things like yoga and piloxing (pilates plus kickboxing), but bikram yoga is a little different.

For the uninitiated, bikram is a 40-year-old offshoot of yoga typically done in a muggy, 106-degree room, which allows muscles to stretch further. It’s also a trendy form of exercise in places like Wall Street and Hollywood.

It’s catching on in the greater D.C. area too, with bikram studios in Dupont Circle, Capitol HillTenleytownArlingtonReston, Fairfax, Bethesda, and Takoma Park.

Having a bikram yoga studio in the area, in other words, ranks up there for signs of change with Busboys and Poets, the upcoming Whole Foods Marketthe cupcake shop in the Arts District, wheatpaste art and the dumpster diver the Hyattsville Wire spotted outside Yes! Organic Market recently.

More information on the new Riverdale Park studio is on its Facebook page.
