A Farmer’s Market in North Brentwood?

Should there be another farmer’s market that’s based along Route 1?

The Gateway Community Development Corporation is considering opening a farmer’s market on the empty lot at 4100 Rhode Island Ave. in North Brentwood.

The lot, which is owned by the Prince George’s Redevelopment Authority, may be better known to Route 1 drivers as the former B&J auto lot, thanks to an old arrow sign.

If opened, the new market would join popular farmer’s markets in Mount Rainier, West Hyattsville, Riverdale Park and College Park. (You can find the USDA directory of farmer’s markets here.)

Whatever happens with the lot, the Hyattsville Wire hopes the new owners find a way to reuse the old arrow sign, which is one of those accidental landmarks that adds character to Route 1.
