Moby Dick, one of D.C.’s hottest food chains, gained notice recently in Eater D.C. for opening its first restaurant in Baltimore.
But you may not have realized that this chain has been in College Park for a while already.
The chain, which serves familiar staples such as kabobs and falafel as well as traditional Persian specialities such as kashk bademjan and must-o moosir, has long had a location in the food court at the University of Maryland student union.
While it’s hardly a secret to students and faculty, the food court is fairly hidden to other Route 1 residents. It also includes a Chick-fil-A (the next closest one is in Silver Spring) and a few other national chains.
The College Park location makes sense, given the college’s international population and the fact that the chain runs an 18,000-square-foot facility near Landover where it prepares meat, yogurt and hummus.
Still, it’s quite a catch for Route 1. Despite being open since 1989, the chain is very cautious about expansion to avoid diluting quality, so each of its 23 locations has come about very slowly.
If you decide to check it out, keep in mind that the food court location will be closed starting Thursday for the winter break.
