A Chocolate Factory on Bladensburg Rd NE

Right over the border in D.C., near Bladensburg and just a few blocks from Route 1, is a state-of-the-art chocolate factory that uses part of its proceeds to help with rainforest conservation, and you can even take a tour.

Co-founders Colin and Sarah Hartman, a native of Brazil, started Harper Macaw in order to help restart the cacao business in her home country. A portion of the proceeds from the sales is reinvested into restoring and protecting the rainforest where they source their cacao beans from.

Unlike cattle farming and other agriculture, which require land be deforested, high-quality cacao comes from healthy rainforests with a diverse array of native plants. But after a fungus ravaged cacao trees in Bahia state in the 1980s and 1990s, many landowners switched to other pursuits.

Since opening in December of 2015, Harper Macaw has offered hour-long tours on Saturdays at 1 and 3 p.m. (Private weekday tours are also available by appointment.)

The tours include an overview of the company and its mission to save Brazil’s rainforests by working directly with cacao farmers.

The tour takes place in a 10,000-square-foot converted newspaper distribution center at 3160 Bladensburg Road NE and includes a chocolate tasting at the end. You can also buy some of their offerings, including a raspberry cheesecake bar and a bourbon barrel-aged dark chocolate. (Their fun election-year offerings no longer appear to be for sale.)

Tours are available on a first-come first-served basis, but you can book a tour in advance.

You can purchase Harper Macaw chocolate on site at their factory, at Vigilante Coffee in Hyattsville, online here, or at several locations throughout the D.C. metro area.
