Why Route 1 Has Maryland’s Best Coffee

Route 1 already has its own honey, beerwhiskey, mead, community farm and now its coffee has been named the best in the state by a national magazine.

That’s the word from Food & Wine recently selected the best coffee in all 50 states after “sampling a lifetime’s worth of espresso,” picking Vigilante Coffee for Maryland.

Back before the nation’s capital had a whole lot going on in the way of local coffee, Chris Vigilante was roasting for local restaurants in the basement of a District row home. These days, his product is a firm D.C. favorite, even if home base is a somewhat sprawling roastery, café and social hub, just over the line in Prince George’s County. The company’s adopted home seems to be agreeing with them—a second, also rather impressive space has now opened doors near the University of Maryland campus in College Park.

Vigilante Coffee has long helped bring national attention to Hyattsville.

Owner Chris Vigilante came in fifth in a roasting championship in Seattle in 2017, and the Hyattsville business has also been cited in national publications such as the Washington PostTIME and the New Yorker.
