WeWork is coming to College Park, the latest sign of a growing co-working trend along the Route 1 corridor.
The industry leader in the shared office space business announced Friday that it will open its first location in the state and its first on a college campus at the University of Maryland’s Discovery District.
The WeWork will be open in the fall in a repurposed building next to the Hotel at the University of Maryland not far from the Diamondback Garage tech startup space run by the college.
“College Park is thriving and the Discovery District is proving to be a destination for startups and established companies alike to grow their businesses,” said Ken Ulman, UMD’s chief strategy officer for economic development. “We are proud that WeWork recognizes the University of Maryland is an economic engine helping to fuel the State’s innovation economy.”
The announcement came the same day as the official opening of CAMPspace, one of two coworking spaces in Hyattsville. The university is already home to Startup Shell, a student-run cowering space which has helped more than 60 ventures launch.
WeWork is also a sign of the university’s ambitions to turn College Park into a local version of Silicon Valley, with startups, upscale apartments and the coming Purple Line.
