Renovations continue at the former gas station known as Jey’s Auto Care at the northern corner of Hyattsville’s Arts District on Baltimore Ave., including a stucco exterior and completely new interior.
But Silver Spring business owner Jey Edward says he still has no tenant lined up at the 5731 Baltimore Ave. property in Riverdale Park, though he has had a number of interested renters stop by.
“For now, I am cleaning up the place and making it presentable. Since that corner bears my name, I want that place looking good,” he told the Hyattsville Wire.
Edward ran a gas station at the site starting in 1976, but the building has sat empty for years, with the town of Riverdale Park even threatening to take it by eminent domain. In 2008, Edward had the gas tanks removed and the soil remediated, which makes the site, which he now refers to as Jey’s Corner, a lot more usable.
At one point, Edward proposed a Dunkin Donuts, but the town refused to rezone the site.
At the northern corner of the Arts District on the eastern side of Route 1, the site has a lot of potential, but the right tenant would also need to draw in customers on its own. There’s not yet enough foot traffic in the area to sustain businesses relying on walk-ins, though hair salons, a cupcake shop and artsy businesses have survived nearby.
