While the Riverdale Park Station bridge looks complete, it’s opening date is unclear.
Developers told the Hyattsville Wire that it could take several more months to open.
The contractor in charge of the project has “substantially” finished its work. But the bridge, which connects the Whole Foods development to the area around the College Park Metro station, still needs approval from Prince George’s County, the CSX railroad and Pepco.
“We know that the County is working hard to complete their review as quickly as possible so we are hopeful that those set of activities will be completed within the next 30 days,” Mark Regulinski with Cafritz Enterprises told the Wire in an email.
But he said the railroad and the electric company still have more to review. CSX has to sign off on an “aerial easement” allowing traffic above its property, while Pepco has to install and connect streetlights on the bridge.
Cafritz remains hopeful that the bridge can open this spring, but until those issues are addressed it’s unclear when exactly that will happen.
“We wish we had better news but we do not,” he said.
Though it will be one of a handful of area crossings for Route 1 communities, the bridge is designed to discourage overuse. Van Buren Street has a large median and on-street parking to slow down traffic through Riverdale Park Station, while Lafayette Avenue is in a back corner of the Discovery District.
