Popular Mediterreanean restaurant Cava Mezze Grill is coming to College Park.

The Rockville-based fast-casual chain first spun off of a more formal restaurant in 2011 and has expanded to 28 locations around the greater D.C. area and 51 nationwide.

It will open by the end of summer in the College Park Shopping Center just off of Route 1, in the space previously occupied by Radio Shack.

Cava is just the latest D.C. fast-casual chain to decide a Route 1 corridor outpost is in order, joining Spice 6 in Hyattsville, District Taco at Riverdale Park Station, Persian Moby Dick in College Park and and Hawaiian poke Poki District and Korean streetfare SeoulSpice, both opening soon in College Park. (Not to mention the more upscale sit-down Greek Kapnos Taverna also in College Park.)

It’s also part of a trend of more interesting international chains coming to the area: South Korean fried chicken BonChon, South African chicken Nando’s and Taiwanese bubble tea Gong Cha in College Park.

Part of this being driven by the increasingly international student body at the University of Maryland, part of it by diverse local demographics and part by increasing attention in the Washington area to Route 1 corridor communities as boomtowns.

Cava is also a good fit in the STEM-oriented college town, as it has gained notice for its innovative use of technology, using a network of customized sensors to give data scientists more information on how to make its stores more productive.
