&pizza is coming to Hyattsville.
The popular D.C.-based fast casual pizza chain, which launched in 2012 by Michael Lastoria, will open its newest location at the Mall at Prince George’s this summer.
It’s the latest entry in the burgeoning pizza wars on Route 1, which includes rival fast casual chains Blaze Pizza and Lotsa Stone-Fired Pizza in College Park and MOD Pizza at Riverdale Park Station.
But it’s also a sign that D.C.-based chains are giving Prince George’s County a fresh look.
In recent years, District Taco has come to Riverdale Park, Elevation Burger has come to Arts District Hyattsville, Pizzeria Paradiso has come to South Hyattsville, Five Guys burgers has come to University Town Center and then moved across the street to the mall, Cajun restaurant BeClaws has come to University Town Center, Persian hotspot Moby Dick has come to College Park, and Hawaiian poke chain Poki District has made plans for College Park.
The county as a whole has struggled to attract major national chains in the past — a trend that is clearly changing on the Route 1 corridor — but the vote of confidence from locally owned businesses is a sign of how much things have changed.
And, again, it’s another reason why the area has become such a foodie haven.
&pizza is also an interesting addition to the local community. It made Fast Company‘s Most Innovative Companies list for 2018 and has argued for the minimum wage increase. It was also dubbed “the pizza shop for the 21st century” by the Washington Post.
