On May 26, 2012, the Hyattsville Wire launched with six news stories.
We commented on an interesting archival photo of the Hyattsville Armory, noted that Spice 6 had recently opened, shared some news about new art at the Hyattsville elementary, dug up a fun historical observation about the area, gave some local gardening tips, and highlighted when the Hyattsville farmer’s market would open.
Our goal was to show the kinds of stories we would be writing: dining, arts and culture, history, urban planning, and real estate and development along the Route 1 corridor, focusing on Mount Rainier, Brentwood, Hyattsville, Riverdale Park, University Park and College Park and other communities around Route 1.
Over the last six years, we’ve published hundreds of articles about life along the Route 1 corridor, gotten hundreds of thousands of pageviews and built up thousands of social media followers. And just this past week, we were included as an official news source by Google News, allowing us to share our stories with an even wider audience.
When we started the Hyattsville Wire, few D.C. media outlets were writing about the area, at least in a positive light. Now, thanks to Busboys and Poets, Riverdale Park Station and the new Whole Foods, Vigilante Coffee, the Hotel at the University of Maryland, SoHy Collective and Fight the Blight, and so many other major developments, nowadays its commonplace for D.C. news outlets to write about what’s happening along the Route 1 corridor.
We’re excited for what’s to come: The Purple Line, new Vietnamese and tapas restaurants, Pennyroyal Station, Studio 3807, bikeshares and trails, a new classical high school, the list goes on. We plan to cover all that and more as it happens, just as we have for the last six years.
