Meet the Winners of the Best of Route 1 Poll

The Hyattsville Wire has announced the winners of the second annual Best of Route 1 reader poll.

The results show just how much the area is changing, especially the local dining scene, which is rapidly turning the Route 1 corridor into a foodie haven.

Though a few local favorites did well again this year.

Vigilante Coffee won best place to get a cup of coffee for the second year in a row, and Diane Contreras again won best barista. Franklin’s Restaurant again won best restaurant, though the competition was much steeper, and it was voted best brewery, a new category. Busboys and Poets won best Sunday brunch.

But a few newcomers to the area surged into first place. Pizzeria Paradiso handily won best pizza (and bartender Kelly Weiss topped that category), Burton’s Grill and Bar was named best date night option (it also topped a new category for best place for those with food allergies), and MilkBoy ArtHouse was picked as best place to go late at night and best place to see live music.

A few winners might help steer you to things you should already know if you live in the area.

The College Park Aviation Museum took the top spot for best place to take the kids, and the new University Park Playground topped that category. Lake Artemesia Trail was named best place to go running and Anacostia River Trail the best place to go biking. El Comalito was named best Latin American restaurant and critics’ darling Northwest Chinese as best Asian.

Readers recommended taking your bike to Proteus Bicycles, buying beer in the bottle and on tap at Town Center Market, getting your vegetables from ECO City Farms and getting a haircut at Today’s Hair (or from Kathleen at Bananas). Their favorite band is Paint Branch Creek, piece of public art is the Bear at Riverdale Park Station, local artist is Margaret Boozer and event is the Hyattsville Arts & Ales Festival.

Supporters of local fitness studios were also quite vocal, picking OpenBarre Studios as the best hidden gem, best woman-owned business and best fitness studio; and Numi Yoga as the best locally owned shop.

  1. Me says:

    Vigilante Coffee is CRAZY expensive

And if Hyattsville Wire ever solicits votes for a “Cheapest of Route 1 Poll” we’ll see the 7-11 between Oliver and Oglethorpe take that coffee crown.

  3. no nonono says:

I don’t call what 7-11 serves “coffee”. Of all the decent places that serve coffee there are much more fair prices.
