Holli Mintzer spends her free time at estate sales, auctions, thrift stores and flea markets. Her target: Vintage clothing, jewelry, art and more.
Now she’s sharing her best finds at Suffragette City, a new shop at 5101 Baltimore Avenue in the SoHy Arts District in Hyattsville across the street from Tanglewood Works, where she had been selling previously.
Technically, the definition of “vintage” is anything between 20 and 100 years old. (Older than that is considered an “antique.”) But Mintzer prefers clothes made from before the 1970s, when manufacturing processes changed.
“The clothes I like best for myself are midcentury — late 40s to early 60s, the classic fit-and-flare silhouette. So that style is well-represented,” she told the Hyattsville Wire. “But we try to stock as wide a range of sizes and styles as we can, since different body types are best suited to different silhouettes.”
Mintzer has some tips for buying vintage.
“Don’t buy anything that doesn’t fit exactly the way you want it,” she said. “Maybe make an exception if it needs a simple alteration that you know you can and will do quickly, but otherwise? Don’t compromise. You won’t end up wearing it.”
Once you buy a piece of vintage clothing, she recommends washing it in the delicate cycle on cold and line drying it to keep it in good shape.
Named for a David Bowie song and Hyattsville’s own history as a starting point for a major suffragette march, the store also stocks a lot of costume jewelry from throughout the 20th century as well as sterling silver and antique pieces.
Suffragette City is open noon to 7 p.m. on weekdays, 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Saturdays and 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Sundays.
