Brentwood’s New Collective Boosts Local Artists

A new lifestyle and vintage store in Brentwood is promoting local artists, especially those with disabilities.

Located in unit 311 on the ground floor of the ezStorage building at 4303 Rhode Island Avenue, The Collective sells its own vintage clothes, furniture, accessories and home goods and offers space for third-party vendors, currently featuring seven.

It also prominently features curated art, including works from Art Enables down the road in Woodridge. Started in 2001, the nonprofit offers vocational programs and gallery space to artists with various developmental and cognitive disabilities.

The Collective is open Fridays 11 a.m. to 7 p.m., Saturdays 11 a.m.  to 6 p.m. and Sundays noon to 4 p.m. and maintains an eclectic Instagram page showcasing many of their store offerings.

The owners are also scheduling regular classes on such topics as soap making, beginner sewing and making your own nail polish. The space can be rented for pop-up shops, trunk shows and other creative events.

It’s part of a growing retro/vintage scene along the Route 1 corridor, which has struggled to attract new retailers even as the restaurant and microbrewery/distillery/meadworks scenes have exploded.

Farther up Route 1, Hyattsville is home to Tanglewood Works, Cookie Wear and Suffragette City.

The Collective will hold a clothing swap on September 29 from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m.  More information can be found here.
