Teriyaki Grill Headed to Arts District Hyattsville

A new teriyaki grill is headed to the Shoppes at Arts District Hyattsville.

A new sign now hangs in the empty storefront at 5501 Baltimore Ave, in the former location of Hair Cuttery between Tara Thai and Chipotle in the popular Shoppes at Arts District Hyattsville, announcing a teriyaki grill is coming soon.

The sign notes that the restaurant will serve teriyaki, teppanyaki and sushi. And Cedar Realty Trust, which bought the shopping center in 2016 for $20.5 million, has listed a teriyaki restaurant in the space for a while.

The restaurant doesn’t appear to have applied for any licenses with local or state government or registered accounts on the major social media sites yet, but we can make some educated guesses.

At 1,132 square feet, its space is smaller than any of the other restaurants in the shopping center — roughly half the size of Chipotle. That and the menu mean it’s likely to focus on quick lunches and dinners and carryout.

This kind of teriyaki joint is common in Seattle, where it’s practically the city’s official dish,   while teppanyaki, which features grilled items like yakitori and okonomiyaki, is another form of Japanese cuisine more popular in America than Japan.

Though Asian restaurants have spread like wildfire in College Park, there’s not a great local teriyaki carryout place, so there’s certainly room for Kaizen, especially if it lives up to its name, which is Japanese for the process of continuous improvement.
