Maryland gubernatorial candidate Ben Jealous will appear at a rally at the Stamp Student Union on the campus of the University of Maryland, October 6, from 7 to 8 p.m. with comedian Dave Chappelle, currently co-starring in the remake of “A Star Is Born.”
For starters, there’s Chappelle, who has never made a political endorsement before this year but decided to start with Jealous, an old friend who he first met because their fathers knew each other.
Then there’s Jealous, whose campaign has been built around skipping the usual political circuit and instead trying to boost turnout in the D.C. suburbs and Baltimore with a platform highlighting ideas like marijuana legalization, debt-free college and Medicare for All.
For now, it doesn’t appear to be working. Republican Gov. Larry Hogan has a double-digit lead in the polls, is raising more in campaign donations and remains one of America’s most popular governors.
But Jealous’ proposals may be popular enough among college students to ensure a successful rally. And as millennials become more active in the political process in the coming years, we’ll probably be hearing more about those ideas in the future.
