Small Business in Hyattsville Gets Curb Makeover

A family doctor’s office in Hyattsville at 5804 Baltimore Ave. is undergoing a facelift by renovating its exterior with some help from the city of Hyattsville and Green Owl Design.

The office of Dr. J. Richard Lilly applied for a facade improvement grant for two neighboring buildings just north of the Arts District Hyattsville development.

The grant program offers a dollar-for-dollar match for money spent by building owners on exterior renovations from $5,000 to $50,000.

Erica Riggio, owner of Green Owl, said the renovations are designed to tie together the two buildings, which have very different styles, and modernize the overall look.

“We hope showing adaptation to a more current look will strengthen the business and inspire neighboring businesses to make similar investments in their facades,” she said.

Riggio notes that one benefit of the program is that it boosts existing small businesses, which helps the area maintain its character as new housing and commercial developments come to the Route 1 corridor.
