A number of homes in College Heights Estates, an enclave of stately homes bordering University Park, use fieldstone as an accent, but one home in particular takes it to another level and was just recently listed for sale.
Designed by noted architect Frazier Forman Peters in 1940, the 3,500-square-foot house at 4105 Clagett Road uses fieldstone for major walls.
Peters first became interested in the material while working as a farmer in Westport, Conn., in 1919. He eventually designed and built at least 41 houses in that city using a unique fieldstone wall construction method, and applied that same method to homes stretching from Virginia to Maine.
A self-taught architect, Peters was ahead of his time in things like how the home relates to the natural environment, how the interior is designed spatially and how the home can use less energy.
The fieldstone walls, sometimes as thick as 16 inches, were a key part of that energy efficiency, forming a sort of natural insulation that holds heat in the winter and keeps the interior cool in the summer.
He was also an author, writing books such as “Pour Yourself a House,” which shared his thoughts on building in concrete and stone.
