In the coming weeks, construction will begin on a new five-story building at Riverdale Park Station across from Gold’s Gym with street-level retail and 230 apartments units.
Lydia Chandlee, a senior property manager at Cushman Wakefield, told the Hyattsville Wire that work on the new building abutting a parking garage will begin in January.
Listed as Building 5 on this map, the apartment complex will be the first multi-family unit on the site, with others planned but not yet approved.
She said that developers have presented design site plans to residents and local officials for two more apartment buildings along the train tracks on the eastern side of the development. One of those buildings will be age-restricted for senior living, but it’s still early in the approval process for both.
“Construction would be a few years away,” Chandlee said.
Developers had long planned for apartments at Riverdale Park Station, but they couldn’t move forward until the bridge was completed over the railroad tracks. Plans also call for another 76 apartments in a building next to the future Hyatt House hotel.
The apartment buildings will be about three-fourths of a mile from the M Square station of the Purple Line, and about a mile from the College Park Metro station — just past the half-mile where most mass-transit commuters prefer to live.
But with a free shuttle to the Metro, easy access to the Rhode Island Avenue Trolley Trail and a Whole Foods and restaurants nearby, it shouldn’t be too hard to convince people to make that trade-off.
