This holiday season we spotted a fruit fan adorning a door of a University Park home. Contrary to popular conception, the tradition of creating a holiday “fruit fan” to post above the door does not date to Colonial Williamsburg.
In fact, the old-timey door decoration dates back to the early part of the 20th century, when it caught on as a faux-retro way to spice up the holidays. It’s stayed popular, in part because it’s hard to mass-manufacture, which makes it a nice handcrafted way to decorate.
Wishing everyone a happy holiday season, fruit fans and all. Let us know if you spot any other unique holiday decorations around town.
