Hyattsville’s Magruder Park could get a much-needed makeover that would make it more pedestrian-friendly and improve its usability.

Under two proposals put together for the city by Bradley Site Design, parking lots at the 32-acre public park in southern Hyattsville would be de-emphasized, setting them apart from the areas where families currently use the park.

The first design adds a pedestrian entrance on Hamilton Street which opens into a promenade that allows parkgoers to walk past the Jim Henson Memorial, a barbecue area, a playground, basketball courts, grassy sporting fields, ending at a new 9,000-square-foot community center.

Parking would be off to the sides, reducing the number of crossings where pedestrians and cars interact, but making it a bit more of a walk from the car on busy days for some visitors.

A second, more conservative design doesn’t alter the current parking situation as much and leaves the community center at its current location close to Hamilton Street, but adds more planters and well-marked crossings to improve safety.

Both designs also include a more dramatic entrance on the southern end of the park to Northwest Branch Trail and the Anacostia River, helping tie the two together more. Coupled with changes at Riverfront at West Hyattsville Metro, that could bode well for more walking and biking along the currently underutilized riverside.

The proposals also call for better nature trails, stormwater management and drainage on site. The first design would eliminate the park’s tennis courts, while the second would keep them.

The city is currently seeking feedback from residents about proposals for the park, which may also get a name change in the near future.
