Là Tao: College Park’s New Hotpot Hotspot

The latest addition to College Park’s increasingly diverse dining scene: Chinese hotpot.

Là Tao Hot Pot, at 8700 Baltimore Ave., opened recently on the north end of the University of Maryland campus, adding a fun option for date night or family outings.

For those who’ve never had it, hotpot is an experience. Bowls of broth — options include Szechuan hot spicy broth and mixed mushroom broth, among others — are brought to the table, where they are kept warm by built-in heating elements.

Diners choose various meats, seafood and vegetables — the menu ranges from spicy beef and beef stomach to enoki mushrooms — which they then cook at the table, dipping in an assortment of sauces.

Prices for all-you-can-eat (with a two-hour limit) are $18 for lunch and $24 for dinner for adults, $7 for lunch and $11.50 for dinner for kids age four to six, and $9 for lunch and $15 for dinner for kids age seven to 10. For an extra $3 you can get all-you-can-eat sushi.

If you’re not up for the full hotpot experience, the restaurant also has a regular menu of Chinese entrees and a sushi bar.

Located at 8700 Baltimore Ave., Là Tao has spaces within the restaurant that can be booked for group events or parties and also offers several rooms for karaoke, with prices ranging from $45 to $80 an hour. Free parking is available in back.

The restaurant chain, which started in Philadelphia near the University of Pennsylvania, also has outposts in Cherry Hill, New Jersey; and another upcoming restaurant in Ellicott City, Maryland.
