Dodah’s Kitchen in Mount Rainier Opening Soon

Dodah’s Kitchen plans to open its new location in Mount Rainier at 3801 34th St., in two or three months, most likely by the end of the year.

Gary Feld, co-owner of the vegan soul food bakery and cafe, told the Hyattsville Wire that they had to gut the inside of the building to bring it up to code and are currently working on appliance installations such as adding a walk-in fridge. They’ve also tapped an architect to help with the interior design and lighting.

After a successful launch at Tastemakers food hall in Brookland, Dodah’s Kitchen looked to the space formerly home to Bird Kitchen and Cocktails.

Feld said that’s because the bakery got its start at the Glut grocery co-op up the street and most of the staff live in Mount Rainier.

“It seemed like a natural location,” he said. “We are a truly local business.”

Dodah’s will be a fast-casual restaurant with takeout and catering, featuring menu items like a vegan macaroni and cheese made with soy milk and nutritional yeast and desserts like a vegan cheesecake made with organic tofu.

Its success shows how an upcoming food hall down the road in Brentwood could help spur more locally owned restaurants.
