Just Rock will open a new space at the new Artisan 4100 development in Brentwood when it opens in January 2020.
The company, which offers music summer camps, after-school programs and individual lessons, will be able to expand its offerings in the new, much larger space, which will include three music studios.
Its existing location on Farragut Street in Hyattsville will remain open for at least another year, said president Shelita White.
Despite the name, White said they teach all genres of music, either one-on-one or as a band focusing on vocal, piano, guitar, drums, bass, and strings, among other instruments.
A former vocal instructor and performer with an Off Broadway troupe in New York, White started Just Rock after moving to the D.C. area nine years ago. The goal was to teach more than just singing or playing an instrument.
“I wanted to teach younger up-and-coming artists that there is more to just performing,” she told the Hyattsville Wire. “If you want to turn your passion into something lucrative, manageable, etc., you need to learn what is was like to record, perform on stage with a live band, the work it takes to that and more.”
To that end, Just Rock students perform at a showcase at Busboys and Poets in Hyattsville twice a year and at Children’s National Hospital for bedside performances as part of the First Lady’s annual event.
With the new and more spacious location at Artisan 4100, White said Just Rock will offer more rehearsal space for area bands, performance opportunities, workshops and songwriter circles for people wanting to learn more about the music industry.
“I think there are a ton of artists throughout the Route 1 corridor who are ready to be discovered and bless us with their sounds!” she said.
Peter Siegel, CEO of Landex Development, which is building Artisan 4100, told the Hyattsville Wire during a recent sneak preview of the new complex that he was looking for tenants who could keep feel of the local arts community along the Route 1 corridor even as it develops.
Along with Just Rock, Kea Dupree Photography will also be moving into the first floor space at Artisan 4100.
The D.C. native, who has been a professional photographer since 2003, offers commercial photography, including corporate headshots, video shoots and real estate pictures.
