You can now buy and sell gently used clothing in College Park.
Uptown Cheapskate, a Utah-based chain with locations in 21 states, recently opened in the Monument Village apartments at 9122 Baltimore Ave.
The store has more than 15,000 pieces of clothing for sale, many of which it bought from students at the nearby University of Maryland. It also offers some new items from local artists and wholesalers.
The opening bucks the trend along the Route 1 corridor, where new commercial space has tended to be filled with restaurants rather than retail. The only other standalone clothing store in College Park, Rugged Wearhouse, closed last year.
If you’re looking to sell lightly worn clothes, shoes and accessories, you can get cash or 25 percent more as an in-store credit. The store is interested in all seasonal clothing and athletic wear, and especially high-end handbags and tennis shoes, and if they can’t buy your items, they’ll donate them to a local charity for you.
Uptown Cheapskate is open from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Saturday, and noon to 6 p.m. on Sundays. Buying hours end one hour before the store closes.
