Taylor Swift’s Butterfly Muralist Comes to Route 1

A noted muralist who most recently worked for Taylor Swift will be painting a new mural beginning today at Riverdale Park Station through Saturday.

Kelsey Montague began her #WhatLiftsYou campaign in 2014, painting butterfly wings that people can pose with to share what inspires them online. She’s installed them as far away as Australia, including a pair in Nashville most recently to commemorate Swift’s latest album release.

She’ll be painting two sets of wings, 18-by-21 for adults and 3-by-3 for kids, alongside the wall of MOD Pizza at 45th and Woodberry streets, starting Wednesday.

The wings will incorporate several local references, including the Rhode Island Avenue Trolley Trail, an M for the University of Maryland, the blue bear sculpture and the historic Ercoupe plane.

The public is invited to watch Montague work over the next few days and take pictures. Like the art on empty buildings near downtown, the murals are designed to be Instagram-friendly, which will give another boost to the Route 1 corridor.

The wings are the latest piece of high profile art at Riverdale Park Station, including “The Soul of Words I and II” by Spanish sculptor Jaume Plensa and a limited edition of four snails near the playground from Italy-based Crackling Art.

“The art installations at The Station have been carefully curated to encourage innovation, creativity, and playfulness,” said Jane Cafritz, co-owner of the development. “The addition of this mural will give residents and guests another way to engage with the art on the property and serve as another symbolic piece for The Station neighborhood as well as the greater Riverdale community.”
