The owner of the buildings where Vigilante Coffee and Sangfroid Distilling are located has similar plans for a historic building in Mount Rainier.
Daniel Simon bought the three-story brick building at 3510 Rhode Island Ave. and intends to renovate it and fill it with creative local businesses adding to the growing vibrant scene in Mount Rainier including the soon-to-open Pennyroyal Station and Dodah’s Kitchen.
Simon previously renovated the Palmer Building in Hyattsville, bringing in Vigilante, Three Little Birds and Tanglewood Works as tenants to the former Model T dealership. He also owns the neighboring building that houses Sangfroid and the Dream Village coworking space.
He told the Hyattsville Wire he’ll take a similar approach to finding additional tenants for the Mount Rainier building, a 7,000-square-foot structure built in 1947 which currently houses the Buffalo Baptist Church and Liberty Church of God, which have been there for several years. Simon says the pastor and his family were the original property owners of the building. He also said the property includes a large rear lot which has potential for an additional building in the future.
“The building is getting a complete renovation from top to bottom over the next year or so,” he said. “The goal will be to preserve as many interesting elements as possible and give the facade an Art Deco feel.”
Simon said he learned more about Mount Rainier when he started visiting the Glut food co-op after he bought the Palmer building in Hyattsville.
“The area has a very interesting housing and building stock and some neat architectural elements when you take the time to really study it,” he said. “Over time you’ll see lots of new businesses come to life. I think it really has a great future ahead!”
