King Kanja Films Music Video in Brentwood

International pop star King Kanja stopped by the new Savor food hall in Brentwood on Friday to shoot his latest music video.

The renowned artist made a visit to help support the new venture of his friend April Richardson, who is founder and owner of Savor. He spoke with the Hyattsville Wire at Savor, then later by phone, more about his video shoot.

“It’s my directorial debut for a new song, ‘Buddy,’ featuring me with a new artist Fobb Reep from Trinidad, who is DMV-based,” he said.

Born in London to a Kenyan family and raised in the Silver Spring area, Kanja Muchoki broke out after a performance on BET’s legendary “106 and Park” in 2009. His style is often categorized as world music with a blend of hip hop, R&B, reggae and African polyrhythms. He currently resides in Los Angeles, but regularly travels to London and Kenya.

Over the years, he’s played at South by Southwest, starred in a Coca-Cola ad and become especially legendary in Kenya, in part because he often drops Kikuyu and Swahili into his lyrics. He has also performed in D.C. including at the John F. Kennedy Center.

The song “Buddy” is being released on his new label, King Kanja Empire, with distribution from hip hop-oriented record label Empire, which also distributes well-known musicians such as Australian rapper Iggy Azalea.

His new video was first shot in Dallas and then at Savor in Brentwood. King Kanja told the Hyattsville Wire that it will probably come out in three weeks, depending on how long it takes to edit.

He’s now continuing on his Royal Family Tour, with performances in Dallas this week and then Los Angeles. More information about tour dates is available as new performances are added on his Instagram page.

We’ll be sure to share his “Buddy” music video when it runs in a few weeks, but in the meantime, check out his new single “Wave,” with Quinton Simpson, which was shot in Malibu, Calif.
