Hyattsville’s Red Onion Records Officially Opens

Red Onion Records opened this week, just in time for holiday shopping and Small Business Saturday.

The popular record store officially opened on Wednesday, Nov. 27, at 4208 Gallatin St., after a number of minor setbacks, owner Joshua Harkavy told the Hyattsville Wire.

Since starting Red Onion in 2006, Harkavy ran the record store from his basement, then out of a location in Adams Morgan. In 2012, he announced he would close the shop, had a change of heart and kept it open, and moved to U Street in 2015.

When Harkavy initially moved his store to Hyattsville, it flooded from a burst pipe. Neighbors, friends and complete strangers worked for hours to save the shop’s rare and vintage records. It has since run into some permitting issues that delayed its opening, until now.

Red Onion will be open this Friday and Saturday from noon to 6 p.m. and Sunday from noon to 5 p.m. And starting next week, regular hours will be noon to 5 p.m. on Wednesdays and Thursdays, noon to 6 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays and noon to 5 p.m. on Sundays.

Harkavy said a grand opening is planned for mid-December.
