The Aldi discount grocery in Hyattsville, at 3025 Hamilton St., recently completed its new renovation and expansion project adding 3,100 square feet for space.
The updated store, which held its official grand reopening and ribbon-cutting on Friday, is now 25,000 square feet, featuring open ceilings, natural lighting and environmentally friendly building materials, expanding from four aisles to five, with more refrigerator space.
“The purpose behind expanding our stores is to create more space for fresh food, including produce that is delivered fresh daily and convenient options like salad kits and ready-to-eat sliced fruits,” Jeff Baehr, ALDI Frederick division vice president, told the Hyattsville Wire.
The renovations are part of a $30 million effort to update 30 stores in the greater Washington area, as Aldi faces increasing competition from fellow German discount grocery chain, Lidl, which opened in College Park earlier this year.
It’s the latest move in the ongoing grocery wars along the Route 1 corridor, including the additions of a Yes! Organic Grocery in Arts District Hyattsville, Safeway at University Town Center and Whole Foods at Riverdale Park Station as well as the move and expansion of Mom’s Organic Grocery in College Park.
