Mount Rainier Library Set to Reopen in January

The newly renovated library in Mount Rainier is scheduled to reopen next month, after being closed since 2018 due to safety issues and much-needed repairs.

The library, which first opened in 1952, occupies a window storefront in a historic building from 1915 near the Mount Rainier Circle at 3409 Rhode Island Ave.

It was long a good example of a small neighborhood library, located near a busy intersection many residents walk past to catch a bus or take their children to school. The librarians worked with the WaterHole juice bar to do regular readings and held crochet workshops for older patrons.

The official grand reopening is set for Jan. 27, according to an announcement by Mount Rainier Mayor Malinda Miles. The library will have new books and a new computer system, along with other improvements.

In coordination with the Prince George’s County Memorial Library System, Joe’s Movement Emporium is seeking a muralist to do a series of murals on the interior walls of the library to complement the bookshelves and space.

Applications must be submitted by Dec. 15 for consideration. Details on how to apply can be found here.

Sponsors of the grand reopening include Pepco, the city of Mount Rainier and the Prince George’s County Public Library System.
