Riverdale Park Seeks Traffic Signal Box Artists

Riverdale Park is looking for local artists to design more traffic signal cabinet art.

Working with the Hyattsville Community Development Corporation, the town recently announced it will pay a $500 honorarium for winning designs for traffic signal cabinets submitted by Feb. 14, 2020.

Artists must live in the state of Maryland. Submissions can be done in any medium, but must be able to be recreated as a high-resolution digital image.

Traffic signal boxes have become an unexpected source of public art in recent years. The dull gray metal boxes, often targets for vandalism and graffiti, first attracted hipster wheatpaste artists.

The idea originated with a neighborhood beautification group in Stamford, Conn., in 2003, and has since spread everywhere from Hawaii to Nevada to Texas as well as areas along the Route 1 corridor including Hyattsville.
