Prince George’s County Now Has Its Own Lager

Denizens Brewing Co. has debuted a Prince George’s County Lager in honor of its new production facility at the Station at Riverdale Park, which opened last spring.

Made with European malts and flaked rice, it has a crisp and clean flavor that makes it more of a light American-style beer.

At 4.1% alcohol by volume, it is “highly crush-able,” Denizens spokesman Brian Coulombe told the Hyattsville Wire, brewers’ slang for a beer that goes down easy.

Denizens co-founder Jeff Ramirez came up with the recipe for PGC Premium Lager before the Riverdale Park location opened, and the brewery started selling the beer beginning this summer. The lager, which is now for sale on tap and in six-packs, will soon get a more official promotional push.

The design of the cans includes some tips to the area, including the slogan “Always the Same, Always Premium,” a reference to Prince George’s County’s motto, “Semper Eadem.”

The can also says “Proudly Brewed & Canned in Riverdale Park” and features a frog wearing a crown similar to the one on the county seal, designed in 1696.

“We’re certainly excited to not only be part of the county, but also the community here,” Coulombe said. “At Denizens we welcome everyone, and we like the idea of this beer representing and being inclusive of everyone in the county.”

Denizens also has two beers that reference its Silver Spring taproom: Southside Rye IPA, a reference to it being on the south side of the tracks, and Big Red Norm American Red Ale, named for Norman Lane, a homeless man remembered as the unofficial “mayor” of Silver Spring.
