The much-anticipated Pennyroyal Station restaurant in Mount Rainier is in the final phase of construction and design and now aiming for a tentative March opening.
The Hyattsville Wire caught up with Garrick Lumsden, operating partner of Pennyroyal Station, who said that the delays were caused by permitting, construction issues and utilities connection, pushing back the timeline for opening.
“The good news is that these delays are pretty well behind us, and we are now in the final design phase, after which we will turn our attention to staffing/training before opening!” he said.
The restaurant has had several previous dates slated for opening, always a tricky subject with restaurants but especially so in Prince George’s County.
Pennyroyal Station will be centered on comfort food, with menu items like fried chicken with buttered biscuits and smoked brisket and bone marrow with mac and cheese. In keeping with Mount Rainier’s dining scene, there will be vegetarian and vegan options as well.
“It will reflect comfort food in the traditional sense of the term, but, above all, we are aiming to serve food that makes our guests feel welcome, warm and at ease,” he said.
Lumsden said the restaurant is also committed to local sourcing for everything from farmers to artists — Vigilante Coffee will be served, while a local craftsman and longtime friend of the owners made the tables.
Pennyroyal Station will also be open all day, to accommodate people working nearby and commuters looking for a quick breakfast or lunch.
The restaurant’s interior will reflect the Singer Building’s history, with many elements of the original structure kept as-is, and plenty of natural light, which will be used for an indoor herb garden.
