New 12,000-Square-Foot Used Bookstore Opening in College Park

BookHolders is moving into the former space of Rugged Wearhouse at 7326 Baltimore Ave. in College Park.

The used bookstore will occupy 12,000 square feet of space selling heavily discounted books of all kinds.

The Hyattsville Wire caught up with Jewel Verde, the store manager, who said staff are having final inspections today and hope to open up next week.

“We are trying to bring back the old bookstore with tables and chairs where people can sit and browse,” Verde told the Hyattsville Wire.

She said the store will have a special section dedicated to local artists and entrepreneurs who are looking to sell their merchandise without paying for retail space. The space will be available to artists to showcase their merchandise for free, though BookHolders will get a 15 percent cut for every item sold.

The new bookstore also plans to have book signings and other related events in the coming months. Verde says although they are aimed at the college market, there will be a section for everyone including a kids’ section. Customers will not only be able to buy a wide collection of used books, but also sell BookHolders ones they no longer need or want.

BookHolders was originally located across the street on Baltimore Avenue in College Park and then it moved to a location in Berwyn Heights before setting up shop in the former Rugged Warehouse space.

Once it officially opens, hours of operation will be Monday-Thursday from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m., Friday 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Saturdays and Sundays 2 to 5 p.m.

Rugged Warehouse closed in 2018 and the space has been vacant since. The bookstore will be a welcome addition to the Route 1 corridor and joins My Dead Aunt’s Books inside Tanglewood Works and the bookstore inside Busboys and Poets in Hyattsville.

Route 1 will be your used book and record destination with My Dead Aunt’s Books and Red Onion Records and now BookHolders in such a great location. Great to see a retail space.

Sounds like they’ve expanding beyond textbooks, then? I look forward to this. I still miss the old Vertigo Books that used to be a few doors down (not used books, but still…)
