Prince George’s County Will Send Your Pre-K Kids Free Books

Prince George’s County will send your children a book each month until they turn five.

Under a program funded by the county and country singer Dolly Parton’s nonprofit, parents and other caregivers who live in the county can sign their children up for a free monthly book.

Since its start in 1995, Parton’s Imagination Library has sent more than 132 million books to children across the United States, the United Kingdom, Canada, Australia and Ireland.

Locally, that includes Washington, D.C.; Alexandria, Va.; Silver Spring, Md.; and Rockville, Md.; among other places. Currently, more than 10,000 children under the age of five are enrolled in Prince George’s County free book program, and about 30,000 statewide.

The books include special editions of such classics as “The Tale of Peter Rabbit” and “The Little Engine That Could,” newer favorites as the “Llama Llama” series and “The Very Hungry Caterpillar,” and books with diverse main characters like “My Papi Has a Motorcycle.”

To sign up for the program, check out Books from Birth on the Prince George’s County Memorial Library System website.

The American Printing House for the Blind, Inc. also provides free braille and audiobook options for the blind or visually impaired.
