Marathon Deli has found a new location just around the corner in College Park.
University of Maryland students and residents have been concerned in recent months that the long-running establishment would run into trouble when its building is torn down to make way for new housing and retail.
But the Greek deli won’t be far away, as it is moving into a newer and bigger space previously home to The Red Boat Vietnamese fusion restaurant, which closed last year.
Marathon Deli, which has been in operation for 30 years, received a notable mentioning in the Hyattsville Wire’s 2019 Best of Route 1 reader poll for Best Place to Go Late at Night. Many residents feared that its closing would mark the end of an era in College Park, similarly to how they felt with the closures of D.P. Dough’s calzones and Ratsie’s Pizza and Ledo’s Pizza now being for sale.
Terrapin Development Company, which is a joint real estate and economic development venture made in partnership by the University of Maryland, College Park and the College Park Foundation, helped marathon secure the new spot.
According to the Diamondback, Marathon Deli will close its doors at its current location in the College Park Shopping Center and reopen at The Red Boat location after the break.
