Sangfroid Distilling is switching from spirits to hand sanitizer to help fight the coronavirus pandemic.
The Hyattsville distillery.at 5130 Baltimore Ave., is currently gathering the supplies necessary to convert its equipment to the production of sanitizer after being contacted by local agencies.
“Compared to the large distilleries elsewhere in the country, our capacity for production is akin to a drop in the bucket,” wrote co-owners Nate Groenendyk and Jeff Harner in an email to customers. “But we will do all we can to help locally and hope that the larger distilleries follow suit to address this shortage. Should we get to the point that we have surplus, we will offer it freely to the public.”
While thoroughly washing your hands with soap and water is proven to be more effective at stopping coronavirus from spreading, hand sanitizer is helpful in situations where that is not possible, such as first responders. Concern over the coronavirus has led many areas to run out of sanitizer in recent days.
Sangfroid has also opened an online store so that customers can pre-pay for brandy, gin, whiskey and maple syrup and pick up their order at the door from noon to 2 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday.
