What’s Open on Route 1 After Non-Essential Businesses Have Closed

Maryland Gov. Larry Hogan ordered all “non-essential” businesses in the state shut down due to the coronavirus pandemic, effective 5 p.m. Monday, March 23.

Along the Route 1 corridor, the only consumer-oriented businesses remaining open include grocery stores such as Good Food Markets in Woodridge, D.C., The Glut in Mount Rainier, Yes! Organic Market and Aldi in Hyattsville, Whole Foods Market in Riverdale Park, Lidl and Mom’s Organic Market in College Park, along with Safeway and Giant; bicycle shops such as Arrow Bicycle in Hyattsville and Proteus Bicycles and College Park Bicycles; convenience stores including Target and Walmart; home improvement stores such as Home Depot; pharmacies; liquor stores including Town Center Market (which is now offering curbside pickup and delivery); pet stores and veterinary hospitals; banks; laundromats; and dry cleaners.

Check before you go as many of these businesses are running under reduced hours.

Restaurants may also remain open for carry-out, delivery, and drive-through sales. We have an ongoing list of which eateries on the corridor are offering takeout, delivery and curbside pickup.

Taqueria Habanero announced earlier today that they would temporarily close their College Park location until further notice and would reopen when it was safe, but they felt closing was in the best interest of the community. They have set up a GoFundMe for their workers and the money raised will be evenly shared with their College Park staff.

In response to the pandemic, meanwhile, Franklins restaurant in Hyattsville has launched a special menu for residents of the Route 1 corridor who are staying home due to the coronavirus.

“If there’s one thing this shut down has shown us, it’s how incredibly lucky we are to be surrounded by such wonderful neighbors & family,” the restaurant said in a tweet. “To make this whole thing a little easier, we put together some family meal deals.”

The “Stay at Home Special” includes two pizzas with a side of either a family-sized Caesar, Greek or green salad or a dozen chicken wings for $30. For $40, you can order four slices of meat loaf, penne pasta, a roasted chicken, pulled pork or fish and chips, all of which come with sides, on weekdays. On weekends, Franklins is offering $3 off its cheeseburgers.

Despite these remaining openings on the corridor, we hope you are staying home as much as possible, only going out for essentials, and when you can, ordering delivery for drop-off on your front step.
