The Hotel at the University of Maryland in College Park and Denizens Brewing Co. at the Station at Riverdale Park have reduced staff dramatically in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic.
With travel and conference center demand down severely, the College Park hotel shut down temporarily last week and has since laid off 150 workers with the hopes of reopening in April.
In a post on its website, hotel operator Southern Management said that it expects to reopen the hotel in April.
“We appreciate the understanding of all our guests and do not make this decision lightly,” read the post. “Your health and well-being and that of our team members, is our top priority.”
Denizens, meantime, furloughed 30 employees effective Monday, as its Riverdale Park taproom and Silver Spring location were reduced to serving curbside takeout and delivery, with takeout available only in Silver Spring. The brewery is running with a skeleton crew of 12 workers between both locations.
“It’s absolutely horrible, but it’s the only thing we could do,” co-owner Julie Verratti told Bethesda magazine. “It’s horrible to have to furlough people. They didn’t do anything wrong.”
Meanwhile, Taqueria Habanero announced yesterday that they would temporarily close their College Park location until further notice and would reopen when it was safe, but they felt closing was in the best interest of the community. They have set up a GoFundMe for their workers and the money raised will be evenly shared with their College Park staff.
And Burtons Bar & Grill at the Station at Riverdale Park also announced they have closed its doors and would no longer be fulfilling takeout orders at this time.
