Vigilante Coffee to Offer Curbside Pickup in College Park Starting Friday

Vigilante Coffee will reopen its College Park location to offer curbside pickup of its coffee and espresso drinks, as well as its full food menu, beans and merchandise, starting at 8 a.m. this Friday.

The Hyattsville-based roastery closed both locations in mid-March amid the coronavirus lockdowns, setting up an emergency fund for its employees and posting online tutorials on making coffee at home.

The online menu is extensive, including all of their regular coffee and espresso drinks, pastries, bagels, acai bowls, juices, coffee beans and Vigilante merchandise, though pastries will be limited until next Wednesday. The cafe will be open from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. daily. You can order your drink online here starting Friday at 8 a.m., with an estimated five-minute prep time.

Owner Chris Vigilante told the Hyattsville Wire that about six workers have kept roasting coffee during the quarantine, and online mail-order sales have grown, allowing them to sign contracts with coffee growers through 2021.

He said that customers are trying a larger variety of coffees and buying nicer equipment, from pour-over gear to Aeropresses and even nicer mugs.

“It’s been really cool helping customers elevate their home brew game,” he said.

Vigilante said he is opening College Park first to allow the roasting team to keep working in a safe environment, but he hopes to start contactless curbside pickup at his Hyattsville location in early May.

About half of employees are able to come back to work, and everyone will be wearing gloves and masks and doing regular temperature checks.

Although the coronavirus seems likely to hurt the restaurant sector in the near future, research shows that coffee itself is pretty resilient. In fact, during past recessions and pandemics, consumers have mostly switched how they drank coffee, rather than quit.
