Gangster Vegan Organics in Riverdale Park is now officially open for take-out and delivery as of today, although a few months past its intended opening date.
The eatery features vegan dishes with hip hop-inspired names, like a Swizz Beets burger, a C.R.E.A.M. smoothie made with bananas and dates and a Dirty South barbecue bowl.
It had originally planned to open at 6202 Rhode Island Avenue, in the space downstairs from the Bikram yoga studio in the historic downtown, the day after the lockdown went into effect in Maryland, but the coronavirus pushed them back.
“We were watching what was happening and waiting to see, but I think people are starting to feel more comfortable going out,” co-owner Taneea Yarborough told the Hyattsville Wire. “And I think there is a need for vegan food right now, particularly when we talk about immunity. People are interested in boosting their immunity and they are longing for a more plant-based meal option.”
You can order Gangster Vegan Organics by phone to pickup at (240) 667-2648 or through UberEats. Yarborough says people can also order takeout in person inside the restaurant and the turnaround time to prep any meal, which are all raw, is usually two or three minutes.
“I’m really excited,” added Yarborough. We were supposed to open at 1 p.m. today, but people started coming in as early as noon.”
Yarbourough said they are slowing working to add all the people who were originally on their team back on so everyone who worked with them has their job back, but that it would take some time.
Gangster Vegan Organics held its soft-launch last week, offering online juice cleanses for pickup. The eatery will be open from 1 to 8 p.m. Thursdays through Sundays and will be adding additional availability over time.
