New Mural Going Up Outside Pennyroyal Station in Mount Rainier

A Colorado artist began painting a mural on the Baltimore Avenue side of the upcoming Pennyroyal Station restaurant in Mount Rainier this week.

The Mount Rainier Arts Commission chose Yulia Avgustinovich to paint the mural. She  grew up in Belarus when it was part of the Soviet Union and later became an American citizen and moved to Denver.

She beat 115 other artists from across the country who submitted proposals.

Avgustinovich has painted murals as far away as Russia and across Europe as well as in California, Colorado and Oregon.

On Tuesday, she began the Pennyroyal Station mural, which will feature colorful and ornate images of flowers as well as local architecture found in Mount Rainier along with the 82 streetcar. She noted on Instagram that she could hear helicopters from protests in D.C. while she painted.

Valerie Theberge with the arts commission told the Hyattsville Wire that the mural will cover the entire face of the building and turn around the corner to the Perry Street side. The mural will cover the entire face of the building and turn around the corner to the Perry Street side. Theberge said the mural is scheduled to be completed on or before June 16.

In late March, the owners of Pennyroyal Station said that they were in the “final stretch” of readying to open, but that the coronavirus pushed them back some.
