Residents along the Route 1 corridor now have another way to enjoy the outdoors during the pandemic, as the U.S. National Arboretum, at 3501 New York Avenue in Northeast D.C., has reopened with limited hours.
The grounds and outdoor garden collections have been closed since the end of the March due to the coronavirus, but staring today, the aboretum will be open every Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 1 to 5 p.m.
Only 200 cars allowed on the grounds at a time. Visitors planning to arrive on bike or foot are encouraged to enter via the R Street Northeast entrance.
Visitors are asked to wear a mask at all times and bring bottled water, comfortable walking shoes and a hat or umbrella as there will be limited amenities and services.
Some areas of the arboretum will be closed because the pathways are too narrow to allow proper social distancing, including the visitor center, the bonsai collection and the National Herb Garden.
The arboretum is operated by the United States Department of Agriculture’s Agricultural Research Service and consists of 446 natural acres of land with 9.5 miles of scenic roadways.
