J.C. Penney will close its store at the Mall at Prince Georges in Hyattsville amid a nationwide restructuring during Chapter 11 bankruptcy.
As soon as the move is approved by a judge, the retailer will begin a liquidation sale, probably after July 3.
The store closing comes amid a dramatic shift for the retail chain, which plans to permanently shutter 242 locations as it attempts a turnaround to years of flagging sales exacerbated by the coronavirus pandemic.
The Mall at Prince Georges has been temporarily closed since mid March, although restaurants and some retailers have offered curbside pickup. With Prince George’s County in a modified phase two of reopening, Macy’s is now open for in-store shopping.
Before the pandemic, the mall had generally bucked the problems facing other indoor shopping areas, with its owners noting in 2019 that they were making more money thanks to new dining options and other renovations.
Still, critics have argued that the mall’s largely traditional suburban design is hampering development around the Prince George’s Plaza Metro station, and planners have said that the vast parking lots should be built out.
