Route 1 tennis phenom Frances Tiafoe tested positive for coronavirus Friday and had to withdraw from an exhibition tournament in Atlanta.

Tiafoe, who literally grew up at College Park’s JTCC youth tennis center, announced the positive test result on Twitter, noting that he had been training for the last two months in Florida, where he resides, and tested negative there a week ago.

He had been slated to play at the All-American Team Cup, a special audience-less event over the weekend to showcase tennis players who have not had officially sanctioned public events since the pandemic began in March.

“I am scheduled to have a second test early next week, but have already begun the quarantine protocol as advised by the medical staff here in Atlanta,” he wrote. “While I’ve been so excited to get back out there, the health and safety of everyone continues to be a top priority.”

Tiafoe, who was ranked No. 81 the last time world rankings were updated, said in April that he had spent the pandemic working out and watching Netflix and looked forward to playing tennis again.

Earlier this year, a one-on-one Q&A was featured of him in the Hyattsville Wire’s guide to the Route 1 corridor in Washingtonian magazine
