Check Out the New Public Art at Hyattsville Elementary

Hyattsville Elementary School recently added some new public art.

When a supporting brick wall along Jefferson Street was shored up in 2012 during a renovation, blank spaces were left for murals to be added as the years went on. Recently, more of those spaces were filled with public art.

Art Works Now partnered with the Hyattsville Elementary Parent-Teacher Association and the Anacostia Watershed Society to put environmental-themed art at some of the designated spaces along the brick wall.

New paintings are up by local artist Rachel Cross, who worked with the school’s fifth-grade class and art teacher Taylor Pestorius to depict a healthy watershed. Other murals from past years were done by local muralists Peter Krsko and Melissa Glasser.

With so many of us staying home due to the coronavirus pandemic, it’s a great time to add more public art to the neighborhood and bring some new cheer to local streets.
