Hyattsville residents can apply to have a free tree planted on their property next spring.
Under the city’s Free Trees initiative, over 150 trees will be planted on private and public property over the next year.
Residents whose applications are accepted will receive a free consultation from Casey’s Trees, a D.C.-based nonprofit that runs a similar program there.
During the consultation, an arborist will look at the existing canopy and make recommendations based on your property, for example, recommending a leafy tree in front of a window that would block sunlight in summer but not winter.
The nonprofit offers a wide selection of trees that are typically several feet tall already and are well-adapted to the soil and other local conditions.
In recent years, environmentalists and economists have attempted to put a dollar value on the benefits provided by a tree in reducing stormwater runoff, boosting property value, lowering energy costs, improving air quality and fighting climate change.
According to the National Tree Benefit Calculator, a mature white oak tree with a 36-inch diameter trunk in Hyattsville could provide $390 in benefits each year.
You can apply for a consultation on the city’s website here until November 15, with first come-first served. Trees will be planted next spring.
